Best Places to Visit in Edinburgh During the Autumn Season
Edinburgh is a city for all seasons, and romantic autumn is no exception. The Scottish Capital’s famous skyline of the castle towering over Princes Street Gardens is enriched by autumnal hues from late September onwards.
This enchanting natural atmosphere almost defies the fact that you are in the centre of one of the Europe’s most vibrant cities. Autumn offers a wealth of theatre, art and music events, situated close to an extensive choice of hotels in Edinburgh.
Highlights of the theatre season this autumn will include We Will Rock You at the iconic Edinburgh Playhouse, as well as ballet, drama, comedy, dance and opera at hotspots including the Kings Theatre, Traverse Theatre and Lyceum.
Of course, from November onwards, there is classic family panto, with Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates expected to be a hit this year.
One of the key cultural highlights of the autumn is the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, with a range of events for adults and children of various ages taking place from October 23rd – November 1st.
The city also offers plenty of shopping, eating and dining, from the elegance of the New Town to the cosy pubs of the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket. There is nothing like enjoying a day out in the crisp autumn air, only to take refuge in the welcoming atmosphere of a Scottish pub, for a hot meal and a Scotch whisky.
If you’re seeking serenity in the midst of your city break, a visit to Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens is a must. The Botanics are particularly stunning at this time of year, when its trees, shrubs and flowers seem to explode with colour. Autumn berries such as rowans and whiteberries complete the scene.
This is an ideal place for a romantic walk, and also perfect for families, as children will love throwing bread to the ducks and marvelling at the squirrels and pondlife.
Edinburgh also offers the great advantage of being a city which has fast, easy access to the surrounding countryside. So city breakers can easily fit in a trip to the river walks of East Lothian or the forestry of the Scottish Borders, to experience Scotland’s countryside at its most majestic.
There is an extensive choice of Edinburgh apartments and Edinburgh accommodation, much of which offers special deals in low season, making an autumn trip even more attractive.
The autumn season is a fantastic time to enjoy a mid season trip to Edinburgh, whether for a family break, a lovers getaway or early Christmas shopping with friends.
